The Beginnings Of Memory Foam
Memory Foam is one of the biggest breakthroughs in the field of sleeping science. But do you ever wonder where this wonderful sleeping tool came from, who invented and developed it and how it found its way to the market? To quench your curiosity, here are some of the milestones in this wonderful foam’s history.
It’s A Space Foam!
What most people do not know is that the Memory Foam is actually invented by NASA for use in Space. Thus, it’s a Space foam! It was during the 1970’s when it was first created. NASA was actually experimenting to create a cushion to be used by astronauts every time they took off. But, the material never made it to outer space nor was it used in any space program.
However, so that this good technology would not go to waste, NASA considered lending the technology to a different field and that would be the medical field. This decision of theirs was not that bad since at that time a lot of medical companies were actually eyeing for the foam, since they saw its potential to be used for medical purposes, such as relieving bed sores and back pain during sleep.
Stepping Stone
Although it was effective when it was first used, Memory Foam had a brittle composition, making it unsuitable for long term use. However, Tempurpedic—a Swedish manufacturing company, was able to create a version of the foam that still had the same efficacy, but had a longer life-span compared to the original. This company was also responsible for introducing Memory Foam to the average consuming market.
When Success Began
However, the foam only became popular in the market during the 1990’s and became so due to several reasons; but most probably because of its uniqueness.
After Tempurpedic became successful in the market, a lot of other companies have begun manufacturing similar foam products that presented the same characteristics and benefits to the consuming market. And up until now research and different memory foam products other than mattresses have been developed and used for various purposes.
What’s So Special About It?
To stress on how unique the foam is when it first came out, it was and still is the only foam that has the ability to contour with the body of the person using it. Thus, it has the ability to give more comfort to its users. The technology used to create it is also the most advanced in the field, which is why a lot of regular consumers were attracted to it, by simply hearing about its ‘space-aged technology’ characteristics.
It is also the only foam that has the ability to go back into its original form even after you have slept on it all night. Additionally, it is able to adjust with your body temperature. Plus it also boasts of its pressure relieving properties, which made it sell more like pancakes in the market.
Continuing History
Now, the saga of Memory Foam still continues to live on as different foam manufacturing companies all over the world have produced their own version of this magical foam. Additionally, further studies are still being done to continue improving the foam’s ability in regard to durability, comfort and other dynamic factors. And there you have the history of Memory Foam!
